When I was trying to decide which cloth diapers to buy I saw that many of the online stores recommended you also buy cloth wipes. “Ick, what a pain to deal with.” was the first thought that popped into my head. I figured disposable wipes were pretty cheap why bother with cloth. I thought the stores were probably just trying to get people to buy more products.
Skip to cloth diapering for awhile using disposable wipes. It did not take long to realize I had to have 2 different diaper pails next to the changing table: 0ne for wipes and one for the cloth diapers. Not a huge deal, but not super convenient. Plus, those wipes can really add up when you have a kiddo with sensitive skin needing top of the line wipes, and wow, those packages run out fast!
I came across a post by Mama Chocolate talking about how she made her wipes and the solution for them. I priced it out and decided to try it. I got some flannel and whipped some together. They aren’t pretty, but they work! The ingredients for the wipe solution are pretty cheap and easy to find: tea tree oil, baby shampoo, and baby oil. The tea tree oil costs a bit more, but it lasts forever since you only use a little bit. I have saved so much money using cloth wipes which has been great! Plus, I never run out because I just wash them with my diapers. I do run out of solution every so often, but it’s pretty easy to whip up a new batch. You can always just use plain water in a pinch (plain water is also good to use if your little one gets a rash).
Saving money is not the biggest reason I use cloth wipes though. I use them because they work SO WELL! I can use 2 wipes and get a pretty icky mess cleaned up without getting nastiness on my hands; whereas I’d need at least 4 or 5 disposable ones! Disposables always seem to wad up and then I get a mess on my hands. Cloth is also gentler on Angelo’s bum. I like that I can control what chemicals are going into the wipes as well (especially if I use all natural baby shampoo and oil). In addition, when I come home from a long day out I don’t have to pick out each nasty used disposable wipe and put it in a separate diaper pail. I can just dump the whole thing into one diaper pail and done!
So that pretty much sums up why I choose to use cloth wipes. People might think I’m weird when I whip them out of the diaper bag, but I’m okay with that.

Hey I was gonna tell ya about dr bronners castile soap with hemp and tea tree oil. Its liquid and I just mix like 1/4 tsp with some evoo with my water.
it’s pretty cool that its all together.
Thanks for the tip Heather! I love having lots of options!
Now see I wish I knew about these 3 years ago. If I get blessed with another child, I will definitely give these a try!
Wow! Cloth Wipes, who knew? Apparently you did, right? My boys are teenagers so I definitely didn’t get the cloth wipe memo.
I already have cloth wipes but only use them for wiping up hands/faces after meals! Ugh. I really want to start using them for diapers! Thanks for the recipe.
Thanks for the informative post. I used disposable wipes. I thought about making wipes out of paper towels to go a little greener.
