“Designing a delicious line of cloth diapers for the modern day baby!”

If you’ve read Mother Necessity much you probably already know that my son is a heavy wetter, and that I’ve had some difficulties figuring out the best night time diaper system. He currently makes it through most nights with either a disposable overnight diaper (although sometimes even that isn’t enough) or a fitted crammed full of inserts with a wool cover. The one fitted I currently own needs so many inserts stuffed in that my son can barely walk in it. He’s not super enthusiastic about me putting it on him – no wonder- so I was pretty excited to review Doll Baby Couture’s OSFM Fitted Diaper in Teddy Bear Picnic.

I fell in love with my first glance at Doll Baby Couture’s Etsy shop. So many adorable prints and colors! I was also intrigued by the fact that there were one-size-fits-most (OSFM) fitted diapers available. Most fitted diapers I’ve seen were sized not one-size. I prefer purchasing one-size diapers since they fit a wider age range than a sized diaper.

The Doll Baby Couture OSFM Fitted Diaper I received is made with woven cotton for the outer with stretchy knit cotton for the tab area. The middle layer of the diaper is 2 layers of organic bamboo fleece. The entire inside of the diaper is lined with soft microfleece. There is a snap in soaker you fold in half comprised of 2 layers of organic bamboo fleece with microfleece on the top side to wick away moisture from baby’s skin. Once you fold the snap-in soaker in half you’ve got 6 layers of absorption happening just from the soaker. When you order you can choose to not have snaps on the soaker if you like. There is also a small doubler included with the same 2 layers of bamboo and microfleece as the snap in soaker. In all there’s 13 layers of soaking power! I added an extra hemp insert folded over in the front of the diaper since my son is a tummy sleeper, and that’s where most of the wetness goes. I also folded the doubler in half and placed it in the front of the diaper. April also offers a MighT NighT diaper that has a whopping 19 layers of soaking power if you’re needing a bit more oomph.

I like that this diaper was really trim for having so much soaking power. My son was actually able to walk in it without waddling much! He waddles all over the place with his other fitted. I also like that the microfiber is against baby’s skin to wick away the wetness. I was truly impressed with how well this diaper was put together. The stitching is perfect and the seams on the outer diaper have been turned and top-stitched for reinforcement. I have no doubt that this diaper will last through more than one child.
I found the rise sizing option on this diaper a bit different than most of the one-size diapers I had seen. It has a row of snaps on top facing inward and a row directly underneath facing outward. At first, I was a bit confused. Then, I realized of course! You fold down the top part so the top snaps are facing outward to make the rise smaller. This would be a rather handy feature if you were using these diapers for more than one child since you don’t have to unsnap or snap anything extra to adjust the rise. If you use the diaper with the larger rise setting the snaps inside the diaper are completely covered by the doubler and snap in insert so you don’t need to worry about them poking your little one. The only concern I have is that the larger rise setting isn’t super high so I’m not sure how long we will be able to use it as a night time solution. It would still fit just fine for the day, but the extra bulk of adding inserts at night make the rise go lower.
The tabs on this diaper are a stretchy knit cotton which I hadn’t seen on a diaper before. I found I really loved the stretchy tabs from the first use. The extra stretch makes it easy to get the diaper on tight enough without it pushing into my son’s tummy and back too much. I’ve had a problem with this with some of the other diapers I own. If I make the waist tight enough then it leaves red marks on the little guy’s skin. This diaper left absolutely no red marks at all and seemed very comfortable for my son to wear all night. It also features extra hip snaps to prevent wing drooping, and the tabs are able to cross over in front for a smaller baby. The waist size range on this fitted is the best I’ve seen in any diapers I’ve tried. If you have a chunky monkey, you’ll love this one. It had plenty of room to fit a much larger toddler than my  27lb 18 month old.

My son really gave this diaper a serious test drive. It held in poo very well (which is a big deal when you have a wool cover over the top). It also seemed to do fairly well in the soaking department with the addition of an extra hemp insert or two. Since my son has been teething, he’s been soaking even more than usual, and one night he did need a change after about 8 hours or so. There wasn’t any leakage since I used a wool cover and changed him quickly enough. I’m pretty sure that night he would have leaked out of almost anything if I hadn’t changed him when I did. The other nights we used this diaper between 12-14 hours with no issues or leakage. The MighT NighT may be a better option for my little guy since it has 6 more layers of soaking power and the outside and lining of the diaper is a more absorbent cotton velour instead of the woven cotton/microfleece.

This OSFM Fitted Diaper retails for $35 which sounds fairly pricey, but consider a few things:

1. How many soaking layers this diaper has (13, 8 of which are organic bamboo) vs many other bamboo cloth diapers on the market (from what I found, typically 2-4 layers)

2. The fact that you only need to purchase one diaper that will fit through most of your child’s diaper wearing years vs several sized diapers

3. The fabrics used including organic bamboo, adorable cotton prints, and stay-dry microfleece

4. The trim fit which can be hard to find in a fitted diaper with this much soaking power

5. That each diaper is hand made in the USA with excellent construction

6. This diaper is fully lined in microfleece so it wont need a stay dry liner

If you still feel you cannot afford $35 for a diaper, you can contact April at Doll Baby Couture to help find some options for a lower price point.

To sum up my thoughts on Doll Baby Couture’s OSFM Fitted Diaper: I love that this diaper fits my son perfectly and is very trim for how much soaking power it packs. I am not sure if the rise will fit him for night time wear until full potty training, but I am impressed that the waist and leg gussets fit so comfortably as he is a bit of a chunk these days. The fold over rise is a neat feature for those who are diapering two different ages at once. I like that you can add and remove absorbency as needed for day/night time wear and for different age needs since a 3 month old typically needs much less soaking power than a 18 month old. You can also easily customize absorbency to areas where you need it most by folding the doubler. This diaper is constructed very well and should last for a long time which is a big selling point to me. I also just plain adore the look of this diaper, and all prints available in Doll Baby Couture’s Etsy shop.
